episode summary

Jamie, Sooz, Nicki, Alex and Mark are out to dinner celebrating Jamie's birthday. Sooz is clearly not in a partying mood and after Jamie's speech in which he declares his love for her, she storms out of the restaurant. This is not a display of anger so much as a display of confused emotions and frustration. Jamie runs after her, she pushes him away and she runs off. This escalates into Sooz eventually having a panic attack and almost getting run over by a car... driven by Riggs and Sasha. They stop, she throws up on Sasha's shoes and whilst Riggs is genuinely concerned for Sooz, Sasha is concerned more with her shoes. Interstingly, this is the first time we see Riggs being genuinely sincere, and bizarrely it's directed at Sooz not Sasha. To the disapproval of Sasha, Sooz is taken back to Riggs' place where she ends up crying her eyes out as she can't understand what came over her and why it keeps happening. It's worth noting at this point that throughout the episode Sooz is seen reading a book and commenting on her state of mind. Riggs tells Sooz how lucky she is to have a great bunch of friends that care about her etc. Jamie decides that he's had enough of Sooz's little outbursts and when she arrives at college next day he blocks her out. She runs after him and he then tells her he doesn't want to go out with her anymore. He walks off making gesticulations about her being funny in the head. Later, Riggs tells Jamie about what happened the night before and realising the error of his ways, Jamie goes round to see Sooz. Sooz is in her room and we see her ripping up a picture of Jamie, again in frustration rather than anger. She eventually lets Jamie in but after he apologises she tells him that she wants to end it with him, blaming boredom and just wanting to be friends. Jamie then asks her to look him in the eye and say she doesn't love him. She does just that and he walks out. Reason then gets the better of her and she goes after him but he's already halfway down the street and the flowers he bought her lay discarded on the pavement. Only then does she say "I love you Jamie".

fun and viewer review

I love Sooz.. it's obvious she suffers from anxiety.. she's not evil she's cute just troubled.
As If was to teens in the early noughties what This Life was to twentysomethings in the 90s
